My GNOME OS is called Debian

Debian Squeeze was released a few days ago, this makes it a good opportunity to post about that distribution. Nowadays, even if I have more duties in GNOME than in Debian, I still believe Debian may be one step closer to me in terms of core values.

Free Software. Debian litterally stands for Free Software, the Debian Free Software Guidelines were the actual basis for the Open Source Definition, years ago. This is still going strong and an enormous effort hasa come to fruition with the release of Squeeze with a kernel clean of closed firmwares.

Or the discussion that gave birth to the Freedom Box project, that happened this year in Debconf10, (Eben Moglen talked about this during the FOSDEM, there is an article on lwn.net: Moglen on Freedom Box and making a free net).

Universality. While it was written that Linux is not about choice Debian still sports the inspiring "Universal Operating System" motto.

And it's true in so many areas, the vast number of supported architectures (and this has practical uses, ARM or MIPS devices are more common these days), or the attention to translations, from the website to the package descriptions (the joy of demonstrating a "babel box", demonstrating how the debian installer supported lots of languages, years ago).

I'd even say that this goes way further, and a projet like Debian Woman came to Debian before GNOME or Mozilla in part because of that "universality" tagline.

I will be updating various servers and other computers to Squeeze in the coming weeks, I don't worry about those updates, and I know they will keep working without causing me any stress for two more years, at least.

As of my personal computer, it will continue to run the Sid branch, just like it has been doing for more than ten years. And it will run GNOME 3, as Emilio Pozuelo Monfort, and others, are already doing a fantastic job packaging it.

Le week-end passé c'était Debian Bug Squashing Party à Dijon, l'occasion de constater l'étendue des dégats dans les paquets que je maintiens. Mais résultat de quelques jours intenses, mes paquets passent de 167 à 108 bugs ouverts. Et c'était très chouette de voir tous ces gens.

J'ai même failli me proposer pour aider à l'installateur, plus particulièrement la réalisation d'une interface GTK+ à partman (la partie en charge du partitionnement), mais je me suis retenu, tant de choses à faire par ailleurs.

Des petits chiffres

22:32 - Debian

Ce matin j'ai recopié des chiffres dans des cases, c'était ma déclaration d'impôts.

Ce soir je recopie des références CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) vers un changelog Debian, c'est une nouvelle version de Wireshark (ex-Ethereal).

Quelle vie passionnante.

Des vieux bugs

Soirée agréable quand bardaf, c'est l'embardée, un lien me mène vers cette page, liste des bugs affectés à ma pomme.

C'est pas joli à voir, ça.

Je ferme le "pending upload" qui avait été marqué ainsi il y a presque deux ans par un ancien mainteneur. Les huit "fixed in NUM", ils ont été incorporés dans des uploads depuis, hop. En reste encore un tas, c'est là que ça prendra du temps, petit à petit j'en ferme 11 aujourd'hui.

Il m'en reste donc encore quelques-uns pour d'autres jours, super heureux.

Après coup, j'ai l'impression que j'ai fait un reload à un moment et qu'en fait il y en avait encore plus quand je suis tombé sur la page.

Gnome 2.14 dans Debian

Ce n'est pas encore fait mais il y a eu plusieurs promesses sur les listes comme quoi ça allait venir très rapidement. Chez Debian, les promesses, on sait ce que c'est. Ouais, bon. Sur la liste debian-gtk-gnome est donc posté début mars les plans concernant la 2.14, more aggressive schedule, cool.

À côté de ça, Gnome 2.14 est sorti il y a une semaine, ce qui est déjà moins bien qu'à la sortie de la 2.6, où l'équipe toute jeune était super chaude, uploadant la 2.6 le jour même de sa sortie. Une semaine, personne ne va en faire un foin. Mais bientôt, il y aura quand même des gens pour poster sur la liste et demander où ça en est.
